Default Shallow Water Problems

I just encountered following problem recently: When I'm commanding a FFG in shallow water and order my helo to attack a submarine, the helo does not change the torpedo settings so that the torpedo immediately crashes into the bottom of the seafloor. Same thing happens if I order the auto crew to attack a sub in shallow waters. Does anybody know how to fix that? Btw: I've got the German version 1.03 build 0367.
Thanks

The torpedo preset depth is not the problem.

In the stock game, the AI always sets the torpedo depth to be very shallow (like 2-30ft) because of a number of issues I'm not going to get into here.

The problem is that the torpedo is hitting the water with too much speed and carrying it into the bottom before it can establish attitude control. My suggestion is to use the MK46 in very shallow water because it is lighter and won't travel as deep, and also to hover the helo before releasing the weapon to minimize its entry speed into the water (I'd use a combination of fly-to and torpedo drop waypoints).

Keep in mind, there definately is a minimum water depth at which you can use airdropped torpedoes.

Cheers,
David

It's worth a try Until now I just ordered the helo (AI) to attack the sub via "right klick-Engage with..." Hope your proposal will work....

If the water is REALLY shallow, then usually the sub is on the surface and you can nail 'em with a ASCM or cannon fire. You can always check by going into the gun control screen taking a look at the target with the helo forward observation camera. Usually, though, if I catch a sub on the surface, I throw up my hands in disgust at the scenario. Sometimes I think people get a little obsessed with the whole idea of SSes in shallow water. "Shallow water" to the navy can mean water as shallow as 9000 feet! Usually, in my experience, it just means, sufficiently shallow that you're unlikely to get convergence zone detections. The submarines should never have to surface.

Thanks, but I'm fully aware of the fact that I can destroy a sub that is surfaced by shelling it. But I'm talking about the North Korean mission where you have to destroy the 2 mini subs which operate at an depth of about 42 to 60 feet. If I order my helo to attack them with an torpedo, the torpedo always crashes into the seafloor.
