Also thought of the film when i read Rockstar's post.

Mankind lives in a black hole anyway, even if the telescope will not prove this.

IIRC, they've been observing the black hole in the center of our galaxy, so that's probably what the announcement is about.

James Webb Space Telescope has reached L2 and operators have made calibrations which I think are complete. Some pics have been taken expecting more soon.

Makes me wonder if the latest news from the Event Horizon Telescope team’s super duper amazing mystery discovery announcement might be an attempt to remain relevant and keep the funding flowing.

No. The two projects have wildly different aims and wildly different capabilities suited to meet those aims.

Sagittarius A at the centre of the galaxy is confirmed to be a black hole. This they announced in seven press conferences around the globe. Seems they were afraid the monster bugger at the centre of our galaxy would suck their TV transmissions in and so they wanted to be sure.
