Yes, looks like the restore included the same vunerability and they got right back in.

I understand your logic. However, there are legit hackers. The work "hacker" is reported to have originated from MIT when they acquired the first PDP-1. Students and faculty worked on developing new software tools, and some of them were writing the first video game, Spacewar.

http://www.mos.org/exhibits/Computin...acking/3c.html

A white-hat hacker would never try to break into your home, unless you asked them to (btw, I like the show "It Takes a Thief" - an example of legit hacking). When you test security systems for flaws you are hacking, whether you define yourself as such or not.

If anyone has doubts about this, check out the google group alt.hacker. When I first started reading the newsgroup I expected to find a bunch of pimply, teenagers showing off their cracking skills. Instead I found a great bunch of people, many who are, or were, system administrators who work in improving security and preventing break-ins. I've learned more about computer security from that group than anything else.

It's the media, and folk likes those who take-down websites, spread viruses, etc. who've given hackers a bad image. As an aside, I hope everyone here has anti-virus software, a firewall and doesn't use Outlook/OL Express or Internet Explorer - these programs are security risks (due to Microsoft's lackadasical concern about security) and just invite someone compromising your computer. Use Firefox web browser or Opera, and Thunderbird email client or Eudora.

Thomsen: Yeah, yeah. They keep together, balls in hand. And the belief in communism in their eyes.
Captain: They will know in time.

Well they are Black-Hat totally.. I don't trust them at all just because of that line on the bottom something with communism and capitalism and stuff -_-. Oh well. They will learn in time. Still it's pathetic that you even bother trying to do something like that. I wonder what actually made them do that.. Anyone thinks there's an explanation ?

So, I got a reply from their email today.

GMail warned me with big red text that the email is propped with viruses of all kinds, and told me not to open it. So I deleted it.

I have a message to the hackers:

OMG!1111!!!!1UN00BS!!!1111LOLMAO

To understand this one needs to learn about the hacker / cracker community. In the beginning, most malicious hackers were just people (script kiddies) with the right skills (programming, code writing, etc.) attempting to break into, and compromise, a computer or network, either for fun or to access restricted data, introduce a Trojan, etc.

For example, what prompted me to find out about hacking happened when someone was accessing the auto-fill info in IE on my computer (through my firewall) and changing the information into funny names -- but he could've easily compromised my system. That began my foray into the interesting world of hacking.

Now-a-days, malicious hacking is more organized and actually profitable. The best way to avoid being compromised is having strong security / passwords and encryption. Oh, and I dumped Internet Explorer and switched to Firefox and have not had another intrusion.

I thank you for this info ^-^. And indeed it's safer with Firefox around

You are still glamorizing them, and there is nothing new to figure out, they are exactly like other criminals. I know about them because my machines have been a daily target for the last 7 years at my place of employment. What you are saying is commonly held - but is in error because it fails to expose them for what they are: simple criminals.

I feel like I am repeating myself on this ?

I also use and recommend Firefox, but there have been numerous vunerabilities in it during the past few months, so don't be lulled by that either.

I was wondering.. is it save to use the u-boot.realsimulation.com site? Or is it still under control of those bloody hackers? I'm asking this because the site now looks normal to me.

You guys are wondering why they targeted that particular site. To me an obvious explanation is the fact that they tout themselves as Socialists and put up a big Soviet Hammer and Sickle. Well last time I checked Communism (the Soviet brand) was polar opposite Fascism (ie. Hitler, the Third Reich, and of course its military assets like it's u-boats). These little pissants probably think they're taking a shot at some Fascist lovers who relive the time of Hitler through their sub-sims :rotfl:. I'm sure they aren't very sophisticated thinkers when it comes to ideology. And if they're targeting a free mod web site for a game that was also itself under the radar then I wonder how good they really could be. I mean shouldn't they instead be attacking the KKK forums or something? I mean if they are so ideologically driven as their banner would suggest.

All I know is that they give Socialism a bad name (as if Stalin hasn't already done enough).

I've said that white-hat hackers are the good guys, the ones who work towards stopping the criminal activity of crackers or black-hat hackers. Have you ever taken something apart, improved it in some way and reassembled it and it worked better? That's hacking - nothing glamorous there. Though malicious hackers will boast about their latest break-in or exploit.

The internet is designed without restrictions and there will always be bad people doing bad things and it's only going to get worse. It's a constant cat and mouse game. The problem is there are too many people who don't have AV and a firewall and don't regularly download the latest patches and security fixes, thereby leaving themselves open to allowing their puter to be used as a zombie computer to spread viruses, Trojans, etc. If everyone followed these simple steps viruses wouldn't propagate around millions of computers.

As Firefox increases in popularity, of course, there are going to be more attempts to poke holes in it. That's why Windoze, IE and OL/OL Express are constant targets. Both the Mac OS and Linux are more secure operating systems, though they are also getting attacked, but are inherently more secure operating systems. If you compare the vulerabilities of Firefox v. IE the latter will always have more because the way IE is built creates holes that allows ways of getting into your system.
