Yet, we did receive hourly reports on the convoy's location, and made a mark each time... no sign of ships... I tried a third run with edits to the file, and the "drone" ships do not show in the game.

i also played those missions during testing and do not remember any problems as you describe them.
unfortunately, i have not played DW since.
