Think I worked it out eventually.

Windows Defender has suddenly decided that it is a dangerous thing for the game to write to the file SH4 in C: Documents, and so SH4 has created a new SH4 file to read and write to in the higher C: directory instead.

Now why does the game put longitude before latitude? That bugs me a bit.

talk to the Romanian-Hungarian developers.

there are quite a few eccentric design and coding techniques that are used in SH4. Don't ask me to explain them.
