"think about this: Ubisoft never envisioned AI planes (or watercraft) firing torpedoes. why would they build a visual support system for something they never envisioned?"

Dunno where you got that idea, try "GONE ASIATIC" :

And if you're in the right place at the right time there are several Douglas TBD Devastators attacking Japanese ships with torpedoes. I didn't do anything special to set that up, TBDs meet IJN and automatically attack. I screwed around for a couple weeks trying to get US PT boats to attack with torpedoes, no luck with that, and fighter planes on both sides ignore each other completely, but torpedo bombers drop torpedoes and dive bombers drop bombs on enemy ships.

Dunno about vice-versa, never tried setting up any Japanese torpedo attacks.

do you see the torpedoes after they are launched? in the event camera...possibly......if one has that option turned on. but that would be the only time you would see an enemy torpedo.

To the contrary, mon ami. Using the external camera, and at least once using the periscope sub-surface, I have seen DD-launched torpedos streaking my way. Not a pleasant sight when a spread of four has you bracketed.

Actually I have seen air dropped torpeodes in external camera (I turned off the event camera long ago, too distracting) running to and hitting the target. Never saw a DD launch torpedoes - however - just because I personally never saw it doesn't mean it never happens.

If a DD or even a Light CA is coming at you and turns to 30-40 degrees to either side you can count on them launching fish at you. When in close quarters with escorts nearby, I will immediately dive to 90 feet or so after firing mine at a target. Their torpedos seem to be using proximity fuses, because I have had them pass alongside and explode, causing great damage. One can sink you, but two for sure will do it.

I did a test mission in FotRSU last night, and on the first test run, just to make certain it worked, with 3 Betty and 3 Judy attacking the USS New Jersey (BB-62), which I (naturally) did not record, the 3rd Betty managed to drop a torpedo, which was visible on the drop, and had a nice splash. I had every intention of capturing the drop in later runs, so I did not rush over to see if I actually "saw a torpedo" underwater, but I can assure you, I have seen them shot at my sub from a Betty previously. The torpedo did impact and explode just about midship... However, subsequent runs of the scenario while recording - and the closest the 6 planes have gotten has been to "skip-plane" into the side of BB-62 after being shot down, creating minimal damage. There have been all sorts of kamikaze-type crashes into BB-62's superstructure after the planes have been basically disabled after the barrage of flak has taken them out. Using a Fletcher DD is worse, if you can imagine that... You cannot see the planes for the proximity-fused flak explosions...

In a little bit here, I'll change the mission set-up to have the planes coming in from different angles. As it is set-up now, they come in single-file, one behind the other, and thus ~ALL~ of the flak on the port side of the ship engages them and destroys them in detail, one-by-one, never having to change their aim... spread them out, pull the camera back, and I'll try it again...

Anyone ever figure out how to get a PT boat to fire torpedoes? I took the silly things out of my mod because they were attacking battlewagons with a Ma Deuce.
