When you posted that picture it jogged my memory; there was a bit of backlash in the ST:TNG production world when the series first came out over the uniforms; I didn't really remember the above costume, but I'd be willing to bet some one, probably the network, got negative feedback over the 'guy in a dress' thing and told the producers to dump the idea; one thing I do know for sure is when the series started and some female characters were wearing short skirts/dresses, which were a nod back to the miniskirts/mini-dresses of the female crew on the original series (Gene Roddenberry was know as a 'leg man'); times had changed in the nearly 20 years since the end of the original series and objectifying female characters wasn't as acceptable; when the first few TNG episodes aired, there were not a few criticisms about the short skirts, particularly the uniform worn by Counselor Troi played by Marina Sirtis...

Not only did a lot of the female viewers (and some male viewers) object to the costumes, so did some of the female actors who had to wear them; Sirtis really didn't like the original Troi uniform, which she derided as something like a 'space cheerleader' getup; Sirtis also didn't like that the uniform drew attention to her being a bit overweight and the producer agreed and the 'space cheerleader' was gone and replaced with a a tailored body suit that evolved as the series progressed; myself, I actually liked the body suits better than the cheerleader outfits, particular when, in Voyager, it reached its finest refinement in the bodysuit worn by 7 of 9...

Now, that's a uniform...

Try the new Lower Decks animated series. I'm really loving it and the way it respects Trek but punches holes in soooo many of the inbred concepts. Four episodes now "aired" on CBS All Access. I even received a PADD yesterday given to me and featured in the newest episode, built by Dietrich from Germany who is the master of PADD builds.
