Default U.S. Sub RADAR questions

On the RADAR screen for every U.S. boat I have ever had there are 2 or 3 what I believe are range settings. Usually like 3,000 and 20,000 and a third one sometimes that says 40,000 that I assume are in yards even though it does not say anywhere. Then there is always another setting that says PREC that is to the left of the ranges and therefore would be the first setting.

My question is what does PREC stand for or mean?

And also while I am at it....

In SH4, late in the U.S. campaign (I always play as a U.S. sub Captain, and I also always play with Map Contacts ON.) you have the option to "purchase" an upgraded Air Search RADAR. I can't remember what it is called, but it replaces the Improved SD RADAR. This Air Search RADAR has the same ability as all the others do in that you can extend it up above the water while you are at periscope depth. However this AIR Search RADAR not only picks up airplanes, which it is suppose to do, but it also picks up all the surface contacts. This one RADAR now picks up everything, airplanes and boats alike, and all while I am at periscope depth, NOT RADAR depth. I checked several times that I was at periscope depth with the Air Search RADAR extended, and not at RADAR depth just to make sure.

My question here is, what's up with that?

Is this a function of playing with Map Contacts On? Later in the war did the two separate RADAR's share a single rotating receiver antenna? Or is this just some weird SH4 programing code thing that has no good explanation because there is none. Or is there some other reason?

Just curious.

I'm assuming you're playing modded as the only thing I can see on the radar console is On/Blank, the range knob, and the focus/sweep knob. As to the second part, sounds like you got the new SV Radar which was designed to pick up low flying aircraft better and doing so also picks up surface units.

The PREC means Precision.

I'm guessing you have some version of this mod installed. I know TMO incorporates it.

Yes, sorry. (I know better then to just ask question willy nilly without stating the Mods I'm running)

I am Moding with the TMO and the RSRD-Campaign.

The scope is also red now when before without the TMO it was that classic IBM monochromatic monitor green. The red looks much better in my opinion.

Thanks for the link. Cool stuff.

Precision. Really. I have wondered about that for so long. So now I am wondering what is meant by Precision because it looks exactly the same as the last range setting. Well, at least to my eyes it looks the same. Then again, all rabbits are far sighted so....

On the PPI screen, it is the same. The A-Scope is quite different. It shows you only a small section, rather than the entire range, and lets you move the "window" you're viewing. This allows you to get a very accurate range from the radar, and the ability to enter it directly into the TDC.

Yes Precisions is what Prec means, its part of the Radar and 3d TDC range mod (which is excellent) bit of a learning curve but once you do, you will love it. Enables you to use the SJ radar way the boats did (within parameters of the sim) to track and shoot target at long ranges, foul weather etc and get hits. Plus can send it to 3d TDC and its fun to watch the solution develop on the TDC alone. Just wish the "Correct solution" button lit up like in real life, would really add to it
