Office, but I don't think there are any settings (at least in vanilla SH4) that allow you to change difficulty, in terms of the enemy.

I attacked an enemy task force earlier today, and surfaced just to verify that I take damage from guns, which I do. However the destroyers hunting me were depth charging random locations, and often reversed into their own charges, killing themselves (2 died this way).

Do mods such as FOTRSU make the game harder? I never have problems infiltrating or escaping convoys, and it is getting quite boring.

TMO v2.5 and RSRD v5.75 have tougher enemy capabilities. especially once the IJF gets their radar working. they can detect you before you detect them.
the mods above are not as glitsy at FOTRSU but the enemy is tougher.

Don't even waste your time with stock, load TMO or another good supermod. Many get flustered with difficulty, but even a harder mod, if you play long enuf you learn what you can and cannot do against the AI. With each attack there are lots of factors to figure in that determine the risk of a good attack and survival. Your goal is to stack as many factors in your favor when you attack to survive harder mods. With proper tactics you should never die, course one mistake...
