This is just one of the great features of SHIII Gen. I think it add a lot of immersion to the game. I like anything that makes you think; my reaction time is so slow it takes me a while. In fighter sims I'm usually shot down before I can react. In sub sims, I usually have a chance.

Same here. My reaction time is kinda slow. I had a Star Trek game (5 CDs) and I was never any good at that. Always got shot down by the enemy. But SH3 is more my style of sim.
