and that was only two of the four!
i was up there last year to visit the Old Girl. she was looking every bit of her age. the repair crew was shooting an electrical issue and there was a problem in the forward torpedo room. unfortunately, a good portion of the boat is off limits to visitors. it is expensive to keep in repair, even for visitors. we are also running short of diesel boat seamen to maintain her. across the lake from Silversides in Wisconsin is the Cobia. she is in much better condition, having survived half of the war patrols that Silversides did. we were able to visit the conning tower and both battery rooms. on the tour, the docent actually let visitors climb into a torpedo tube. not.for.me. anyway, if you get an opportunity to visit either one, it is worth the money.
