Changing Uboat Type

I was wondering if there was a way to change what boat you are operating with notepad++. What I'd like to do is change from the type VII C to the type VIIC/41. I was wondering if there was a way to make changes to the game file to allow me to do that. I know it's cheaty but I'd like to drive that boat before late 1944.

For single missions, this is easy: Change the appearance date in the *.mis file to have more boat choices when selecting the mission.

For career, tweaking the savegame files is not doable I think because:

Within the savegame files you would have to find out the Class Number of the boat you want, and its Name used in the file, the exact syntax used for it, and then change the appropriate files where these 2 values are present, one of which is the *.mis file.
But problems will arise, because different boats have different crews, different torpedo slots, different tech attributes which are also defined in the files to save the momentary status of your boat, together with the crew status, textures for the boat to load etc.
So, I don't think that there is a simple solution to change your boat, you would have to change *many* values in those files. Make one bad change and the game will crash.

It is probably much easier to tweak the game files so that you are assigned a specific boat while you are in port, but I currently don't know how to do this.

in a word, no.
if you wish to change boat (boat type or model), you need to start a new mission or a new career, depending on which path you are on.
once a mission or a career is started, one cannot change the boat-type.
so, start a new career and start with the other boat.
