This is a huge difference, but I think it needs to be fixed.
If you order crash drive (via button) it should behave like that (in my opinion) automatically.

It is strange, that you save time, only when you do the steps mentioned by you.
For example, wait till the sub is submerged totally and then change to 50 meters. Also to set yourself to the highest speed, but maybe since the game is programmed especially to give the orders to the crew and use/move them to the stations it might be intentional.
