How to create and model new ships for Silent hunter 4?

Hello I am very new to the modding scene but I'm wondering what programs I need to model new ships for SH4

A 3D "art" program, such as Blender, or Maya, and the skill to use it. S3Ditor is the program to use to bring 3D objects into Silent Hunter 3 & 4. Start studying all of the nodes in a ship already in the game (dat, sim, zon, dsd, val, etc files), and it can be more than a little daunting.
