Anvar is right, WAC5 is the must have for SH3.
But you should wait for official 5.2 release, because 5.1 is really not stable (at least on my rig)

It brings old SH3 to a new level i didn’t even think of

Wonderful U-Boats, great visual effects, tons of nice ships, enjoyable campaign, very rich environment...

Meanwhile GWX is not that bad at all, very stable and fluently, even heavily modded. But apparently you already know it.

NYGM is an other interesting alternative, with improved U-Boats and realistic behavior. But opposite of WAC for harbor environment.
