The SH5 is updated properly and immediately
Not sure if changing Nvidia GPU settings is going to change anything if base game runs fine.
DPI override has been performed as noted earlier.

The HDD works for a while and then the screen stays black even after many minutes.

Hi GA
You should not need a compatibility mode with Windows 10 for SH5.

Check this out and trace your steps as to missing something that you should have done.
Pay special attention to the PDF installation instructions how to start your game before enabling mods.
Post #433 A Pictorial Step By Step Guide Through The Wolves Of Steel (TWOS) Installer > Pictorial

What are your systems specs?
With my SSD drive it takes 3 minutes 22 seconds from when the TWOS loding screen disappears to the main menu appearing.
With a mechanical Hard drive I suspect you are looking at over 5 minutes.

You could also have a look in Silent Hunter 5\data\Applications where you will find the Dgbview application.
Start this before using your SH5.exe and it will give you lists of what is happening as the game is loading.
If there is a problem then it should tell you what it is.

Another useful source of information is the Log file which you will find in the main menu.

Ah I forgot to delete the .cfg file. That fixed it and the game loaded.

Now I have a different problem - the speed and depth indicators are showing the number 0, even when I accelerate or dive down, and when I click on the left sidebar for commands like "periscope depth" "surface the boat" etc. it does nothing.

If you are on the bridge and click on 'periscope depth or 'dive' or other submerged commands it will do nothing, you need to be inside your sub.

Do not ALT-TAB out of the game because keyboard commands will cease to work or grafical oddities can happen (invisible crew, messed-up teleport etc.) If it happens, save & reload.

For the TWoS mod to work correctly your game folder must be a non-protected one and you need all executables start in 'Admin rights' mode. For not setting all that manually it's best to install game elsewhere than the default proposed Ubisoft folder, e.g. C:\games\SilentHunter5.
Also not sure, but you may run into keyboard or font display problems if your system is different than US or European language settings; in this case set US keyboard (or German, or European) in Windows or change the 'Regional settings' in Windows>System to match your SH5 install language.

I'm not on the bridge. Going to Persicope Depth, Diving etc. works for me in the base game though, even on surface. Here none of the buttons do anything.

Also, what worries me is that I don't know my depth or speed, the numerical indicators show straight 00, even though being on surface at least depth should list something like 5 - 6.

What are you playing? Stock game or TWoS or other mods? If you use mods please publish your JSGME modlist. Go into JSGME > Tasks > 'Export activated Modlist'; this will create a file in the MODS folder. Paste it here. OR:

If you use TWoS version before 2.2.6, re-install game, update to v.1.2.0 and install TWoS 2.2.6. It's made so that you won't do errors if you follow install instructions.

If you use the stock game, how did you install it before playing? You cannot install and play the game, too many bugs and malfunctions.

I am playing TWoS yes.

See here for the depth and speed readings: https://i.imgur.com/SWX1Zjh.jpg

The left bar is unresponsive.

The stock game lists both depth and speed readings responsively to actual speed and depth and takes the commands.

Only other mod I use is the one that colours ships on the map, which comes with TWoS.
