For all the years I've played SH III and GWX I've never bought sonar for any of my boats. The comment in the manual about "makes a loud signature easily read/tracked by Escorts" (or some such) has put me off.
So, my question is; has anyone out there used it? What does it do? Does it show an outline of a ship like radar will show? Can you bring a hydrophone fix into sharper detail with a brief burst of sonar? What are it's plus's and minus's? Cost effective? Enquiring minds want to know. ![]() David I |

It gives instant bearing and distance to a target! No work to figure anything out. It does give your position away to escorts. I’ve used it. It’s nice against a lone ship.

Bstank06,
Thanks for the response. It will be a perfect add-on to my electronic warfare menu. I usually play with a IXC boat as a lone wolf whose meat is lone sheep. Although I have gotten pretty good at tracking with hydrophones only, it's a tricky and time consuming process. I can see that caution in it's use will be important. David I |

I'm always excited to purchase the sonar, thinking "if I would have the sonar in this situation I would sink all of them with just a torpedo!!!!"
However, once I got it, it's the stage where you navigate more time underwater that on surface and I almost never use it ![]() |
