I got it working by turning compatibility mode to XP sp3

butttt it was fine in game, I'm chasing a convoy stealthily (well I'm going hell for leather on the surface to get in front of it) and at higher time compression the games get very glitchy. Then as I neared the convoy it crashed again. I mean i could turn settings down (I mean my pc is complete **** but I wouldbnt have thought SH3 was that taxing)

I guess you are playing GWX here and not the stock game only?

Make sure your vanilla game is v.1.4 without Starforce before playing vanilla, or before installing any mods, I don't know what's the case in Steam.
It's worth to take time and read the big manual of GWX, especially you need to download and use additional files for SH3 Commander to be used with this mod (otherwise crashes will occur!). There is a dedicated GWX homepage where you can get these files.
If installed correctly with all pre-requisites, GWX is one of the most *stable* megamods.

For TC: I would only go to x512 if no ships are nearby and you are somehwat away from ports with heavy traffic; when ships are nearby I would go at max. x64. If you skip this then the game may crash sometimes (just save before and you are ok). Then if serious damanges are to be repaired in your sub, never go to high TC, it can get damages worse...
Also refrain from ALT-Tabbing out of the game, SH series don't like it and some strange things can happen.

wow what a difference GWX makes.

I'm merrily trying to evade a destroyer as I can hear the convoy slipping away when the destroyer hunting me and his pal get sunk one after the other. I assumed they'd collided somehow until I realised there is another sub nearby. Haha when you've played stock SH3 for a while it's completely mental seeing a friendly ship
