For speech recognition to work your language version of windows needs to match the major ones supported by the speech engine.

This may help: https://zulja.wordpress.com/2015/08/...h-recognition/

Thank you pisces, I have tried several different (matching) language/region pairs, yet the menu that allows you to configure SR is completely greyed out.

I have Windows 10 Pro and had to change my language from dutch to Enlish before Microsoft Speech wanted to 'ungrey'. If you have a Home version then I think you can't change the interface language.

I have pro. I also had an error message saying 'Ordinal 380 could not be located in ..../speechUx.dll'. I believe my installation is still corrupted.

Is your Win10 and "in-place" update on top of an old Win8.1? I'm almost afraid to suggest it (I had issues after doing this on my original Win10 install), but you could try the special options boot, and try the "Repair" option Half the time, mine used to find things wrong and "fix" them, and the other half of the time, it'd find things correct and break them, or put things back in that I had taken out... I no longer use Win10, and haven't since the commercial release, so I have no idea if you would "fix" or "break" something...

No it was Win 10 pro ever since I set this box up and, yes, I did an in-place repair/installation, yet the issue persists. I will be back in contact with the indian lady one of these days. Thanks for the hint though.

Last little suggestion, are you logged into the computer on an administrator's level account?
