My younger brother keeps telling me to join Snapchat. At first i was like "Yeah, i already have an account"..turns out, what i thought was "Snapchat" is actually "Instagram"

Good heavens i can't keep up! I guess social media is now on another level huh? I just confirmed i am ageing like fine wine

It's like What'sApp, but less functions, and pictures destroy themselves soon after viewing. One has to follow this nonsense to be "up to date" of course.

They all use and sell your data, which is why they "do not cost anything" (apart from your privacy).

Unbelieveble with what kind of sh.. you can make money today. Like with updates for light bulbs (WLAN ones, but still), or for your car's audio system. or engine.

You're not the only one lost with things like snapchat, Sophia. As Catfish said, people who area bit more sensible are suspicious of apps like snapchat and others for the reasons Catfish mentioned and I'm sure other reasons as well.

I don't know what Instagram is either, but I think Snapchat is that thing that Reece uses to send intimate photographs of himself to his wife's friends; they then burst into flames moments after viewing or something like that (prolly like in "Mission Impossible")

Snapchat was one of those social media things that was poorly done the first time it was introduced. Due to the nature of the 'self-destructing' images (the images, I believe, were still saved on your phone), it was extremely criticised as a great many teens, especially in the US, used the service for sexting images of themselves. They finally changed the protocol for the app to prevent it, and that's the last I heard.

No worries, Sophia...I'm 17 and barely have a clue about most of the social media out there...I just use Facebook and Google+.

I know more than one small scandal that resulted from them being saved before "self destruction" so one shouldn't rely on it.

But why? Haha. Speaking of all this..i coincidentally just stumbled upon a blog post that sought of tries to explain the difference between Instagram and Snapchat.
