They've also defended the use of the Confederate Flag, Chick-Fil-A, The Westboro Baptist Church, the Washington Redskins and Rush Limbaugh. How quickly you all forget when they're defending someone or something you don't like. Personally, I find the ACLU to be an honest broker; one of the few remaining in America.

America’s mental health system is having a breakdown. Suicide rates are at a record high; drug addiction is epidemic. There aren’t enough therapists, particularly not enough who accept insurance. And too often the most vulnerable and severely ill end up on the streets, or fill our prisons and jails.

But for the roughly 43 million people in the United States who suffer from mental health problems each year, the bottom line is that most still aren’t getting treatment.

I heard a rumor and I can't link to rumor, but I heard that non mental patients are saying that they have known mental illness signs to get the drugs the normal mental patient (normal mental patient?) needs and then trades the drugs for money or other drugs with the neighborhood drug dealer, which could number in the high numbers and you can't do anything about that either.

They should change the name of the drug enforcement agency DEA, to the drug education agency and start with the five year olds to have a better society 20 years from now.

That being said, the cut backs in mental health care has taken its toll, and if nothing will be done about these peoples access to firearms then obviously something will have to be done about their access to mental health care up to and including major investment in mental health care centers which are affordable for all.
That probably won't happen, so I guess we just have to take a section of American society and write it off as collateral.

Not trying to lay blame, just pointing out that deinstitutionalization is a major factor in these situations.
(now that's a 2 dollar word). Might be time to look into bringing them back on a limited basis.
