Once again thanks to all those that replied and tried to help. Skin-np, nice one, as what you suggested works. In training mode I scored 4 out of 4 hits and so I took on the convoy. Alas it didn't go to plan as somehow I was detected by the front escort, still I managed to sink him with a desperate last minute 3 torpedo salvo. I survived the counter attack and will get another bite at the westbound convoy when darkness comes.
The Berbster I will check out your tutorial later as it can't hurt to get more info.
