SHO What silent hunter would i want to play?

Hi there.

Back in the good old days i used to thoroughly enjoy silent hunter 3 on reasonably high realism.

I tried number 4 when it was new but it was buggy and i missed some thing from number 3.
I guess stuff is better now with patches and mods...

If I wan't to play a polished ww2 sub experience with some depth to it what should i go for? (Modern hardware so if its good looking thats a bonus but not the end all be all)

I assume this might not be a straight answer, but I would love to be pointed in a good direction

A question about SH5 How playable is the vanilla steam version and what significant parts will I be missing out on? (NM I found the listing, there are loads of things in that modpack)

I was just a bit cautions since I have prieviosly had trouble with external mods on steam games, but I guess I just have to bite the bullet
