Surely there's a huge problem with magnetic detonators but using impact at the right angle (90degs +/-10) and auto targeting, I've minimal failures and usually most ships sink immediately with the first hit.

While that's true, it's not exactly realistic. Early in the war they didn't have a switch, and couldn't turn the magnetic pistols on and off.
Still, if you want better results that's sometimes the way you have to go.
