Default Jones Enabler

I downloaded the mod enabler, extracted it, ran the setup file and all was great until it apparently went to the net and landed on a "404 Not Found" page.

Is it no longer available?

Sorry I take it back. It did install it. Apparently it was looking for the manual online. Who needs a manual?

Well I guess I need a manual....

I installed the enabler. The exe file is in the main SH4 folder. Also in the main folder is a subfolder named MODS.

I put the GFO mod in that MOD folder.

I started the enabler.
I made a snapshot of games files
I activated the GFO mod
I compared game files to the stock snapshot (no differences)
Just to check started game and started a quick mission
The mod not working.
I know this because the battery button is supposed to change to weather button

Do I need to put the MOD folder elsewhere, or the enabler file?

No. They both go in the main SH4 folder.

There are two common possibilities. Run through these first, and see if they fix it.

So, this is what you want:
Code:
SH4 THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY
  |
  -> jsgme.exe
  |
  ->MODS
      |
      -><mod to install>
           |
           ->Data
Depending on how you unpacked the mod, you may find that inside the "<mod to install>" folder, you have a folder called "<mod to install>". Inside this folder you will find the "Data" folder.

Like so:
Code:
SH4 THIS IS THE WRONG WAY
  |
  ->MODS
      |
      -><mod to install>
           |
           -><mod to install>
                 |
                 ->Data
In this case, run JSGME and disable <mod to install>. Rename the first "<mod to install>" folder to "<something>".* Drag the "<mod to install>" to the "MODS" folder, delete the "<something>" folder. Run JSGME and enable <mod to install>.

Also, if you are running Vista or Windows 7:
These operating systems assume that you are a complete idiot. Unless you are running as the administrator account, you are blocked from making changes to files in the "Program Files" directory. I would suggest installing SH4 in a different directory, for example, "C:\Ubisoft\SH4". This will prevent any problems. If you don't feel like re-installing, either use the administrator account (bad idea) or run JSGME as administrator. I don't remember off the top of my head how to arrange that.**

*The value of <mod to install> may vary. The value of <something> will vary, it doesn't matter, I actually just hit random keys. You're just going to delete it anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

**Input of author included at least one large gin and tonic. Check instructions for sanity before using. Author claims no responsibility for whatever you may do to your computer.***

***Always make backups before making major changes to anything.

Do you have SH4 installed under "Program Files"? If the files weren't updated, this is likely.

Well, you've got a readme.txt with your JSGME app......I suggest you read and follow it.

Looks like you have since you made a "Snapshot" of your game files (so you're onto a good start).

As was pointed out, having the main game files placed into the "Program Files" folder (or whatever your particular OS version of Windows you're using calls it) isn't a good thing. OS versions like Vista, or Win7 will not allow changes to your game files if you have them in the default "Programs" folders....unless you have complete Administrative rights to the programs added there. Make it easy on yourself and install the game someplace other than the "Programs" folder of the C:/ drive.

As the following shows, the main game folder (I'm calling it "Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific_v1.5") is placed on my D:/ drive under Games\Ubisoft\.

My folders are set to show "Icons"; the 5 circled files are what you should have when properly installing JSGME to your main game folder of an SH v1.5 game. That "JSGMEHelp.txt" is the Readme file I mentioned earlier. By all means....read it. It's your manual.

When you run the game for the first time, the "SI.bin" file will be made and added to your main game folder. Depending on when you asked JSGME to take a "Snapshot" of your game files after installing JSGME, will determine if you have the SI.bin file shown as "New" or not when you make the "Compare Snapshot" function. Also, if you have taken a couple of in-game images, those will show up as "New" too (that's why I've got them underlined). The 4 different states of your game files are Same; Different; New; Removed, after making a comparison. Any number of files other than showing as "Same" should cause you to look through the list to see what has changed. If its something as simple as the New: SI.bin file......you're fine. So is the New: SH4Img.... images, your fine there too. Just look out for files coming back as "Different" or "Removed".....could be a corruption issue (although there are a couple of German flags "Removed" from the "Data\Textures\TNormal\tex" file for some reason with the use of some mods?? Why.... who knows??? not really a big deal either).

For the most part, the above image should look very similar to your game folder with the 5 JSGME files correctly added.

Been away a few days. I had already uninstalled the program from "Program Files (x86)" and installed in C:\SH\

I installed Jones there and then the GFO mod. I ran a base snapshot, installed GFO mod, and compared to the snap. This time it listed a bunch of "new" files. I was not clear whether it was actually working though...could not tell...

However...I do have the double directories as noted above. Will change these.

Thanks for help.

Removing the double directories (actually triple in some cases ... the data directory would be three levels down) got the mod into the game because now on startup the into is different and it says "GFO".

Alas it crashes when I try to load a game however.

Tomorrow is another day!

did you get things sorted out?

are you running v1.5 of the game? otherwise it will crash.

did you add the repair fixes for errors with GFO? they fix the menu bar and replace some of the missions which can cause CTD errors.

just about any mod you find is made to run only with the latest v1.5 of the game (sold as the U-boat ad-on) and only a select handful of mods will work with v1.4 game.

I do have it working thanks to everyone's help.

I am guessing now that you cannot use existing game saves when you install a mod.

I had a good career going on my Steam version but when I switched to a downloaded version of the game it would load a game saved under Steam but crash when I tried to save it back. Bummer. I had a nice Balao.

Then I started career over with the stock local version. I had camera problems and could not finish a mission so I decided to install the GFO mod. When I finally got the GFO mod installed correctly, game crashes when I try to load those saves I had prior to modding.

So now I am on my 3rd career start.

Both versions are 1.5 with Uboat expansion.

The only mod I am running is the GFO itself. I thought I also had to install the Menu Bar mod but Jones gives me a message that the files are already affected by the main mod, and indeed the menu bar is changed.

One question... The GFO mod clarifies the dials in the Sonar room, however, it brings my view in very close such that after I tune the right dial to the best bearing, I have to literally move my view to the left dial before I can hit the range toggle. Is this the way it is supposed to work? Or is there a way to back away so that both dials are visible at once.

Also in the stock game the Sonarman will report a range even if it exceeds the dial range. The GFO does not. Correct?

Thanks
