Default Ahoy there

Ahoy from a new member. Silent Hunter 1 was the first computer game I ever had, that is what got me started. I still play it in a DOS emulator on both a Windows computer and a Mac, but I just bought Silent Hunter 4, so that will probably replace it. I know, behind the times. My first question, is there a rudder control like in SH1, or do you simply steer with the compass?

You really ought to get SH3, since it's the best of all. And welcome

Welcome aboard and enjoy SUBSIM!

Your question: No. You don´t have rudder control in SH4. Only by compass or waypoints. Also I played SH1 for years.

Best regards.

Welcome to Subsim. Like Eichhörnchen said, try out Silent Hunter 3, 4 or 5 if you get a chance.

With Silent Hunter 3 and the like, you can switch between compass or ( manual ) direction by way of a button below the compass heading. The rudder control is more useful for close in combat with ships. Hope that helps.

Welcome to Subsim, De Ruyter.

There is a rudder control on SH4. There is a tab underneath your compass gauge. Click the tab and the compass gauge changes to show the rudder position. Just click anywhere on the rudder gauge and the rudder will move to the position clicked. It goes from zero to just over 35 degrees. Use the apostrophe key to center the rudder when you are done with your turn. You can click on zero degrees but the rudder won't be quite centered if you do. The apostrophe key centers the rudder so you aren't in a gradual turn.

Good luck, good hunting, and a have a lot of fun when you play SH!!!

Since I am American, I don't play video games where I fight against Americans. The only exception I have made is the Russian campaign in Red Alert 2 (awesome game). I tried SH2, but stopped because of my feelings about that. I will fight the British, French, Russians, Canadians, but not the Americans. Personal preference.

Thanks. I had found the rudder control accidentally, just by noticing the help notice when my mouse was over the tab, but did not know about the center button. That will make it a lot better. The manual just talks about steering with the compass, which I found annoying. I think I will spend a fair amount of time in the tutorials, especially the torpedo tutorial, before starting a campaign. Manual torpedoing is very complicated.
