Default Back to SH. Questions to veterans.

Hello guys!

First, let me express my greetings to this polite, educated and helpful community and especially to modders, who did all their wonderful job to improve SH3 game. You guys, really rock!
Now about my case.. l made a full circle and now, something inside me says that I need to jump into the German submarine and sunk some ships. I already had some SH3+GWX 3.0 experience back into 2010, when i abandoned the game bcz I basically lost my save and went mad about it. Now, I have a strong desire to play again, but I dont want to ruin my experience and I decided to ask a couple of questions to Subsim veterans before ill possibly give it a go.

2) SH3+GWX3.0 in WS and HD

Back in 2010 I used highres fix for 1920X1200 resolution and was ok with that. GUI aspect was little distorted but that wasnt a problem. 5 years later I see some GUI`s were developed for the game, but they all still support only low WS resoulutions. Ahnenerbe`s GUI is only one who support HD resolution, but it have some minor issues with other mods and most important, this GUI looks too small for me (bad vision)

So I have a couple of questions here
a) about highres fix, is it distorts both GUI and 3D scene aspects or only GUIs one? I really cant say for sure myself.
b) how good is Ahnenerbe WS GUI? Looks like it supports correct aspects for 3D and GUI, but all instruments are too small and there is some incompatibilities, but Im ready to use it if you recommend it over other options.
c) Maybe there is another solution I dont know about yet? My goal is to run game in 1920X1200 (1080) with correct aspect, and I want my GUI to function without bugs and errors. Whats your advice?

3) Atmosphere (Environment)

Back in 2010 I just started to experiment with mods before I stopped playing. Now I plan to install some environment mod but still not sure about basics.

So I have a couple of questions here as well
a) I need to install only one env mod at a time. I cant have GWX 16km+SH5 water or M.E.P. + SH5 water at the same time. Right?
b) What mod do you recommend, guys? Which one is looking nice, offers good big sun halo, dont have floating ships issue, etc
?

4) Save game problem

Now last, but most important question. I dont want to ruin my game again. So far I trying to summarize my knowledge of this problem and it comes to:
- create dummy campaign
- uncheck read-only attribute in SH3 sub-folders
- do not save submerged in TC and near other active in-game objects
And my questions are
a) Can you add any additional save game hints to these?
b) Is there a situation where I can save with 99% safety, like in port, or problems still can arise with any save?

Sorry for the big post and bad English, I hope I made some sense here.
Thx for the help in advance.
Best Regards!

P.S. First question (SH3 vs SH5) is edited out, since I decided to stick to SH3!

Port saves should work without fail. If nothing else works play dead is dead, leave the computer running at all times while at sea, and only save while at port. That only costs you a little bit more on your electricity bill.

Hi, Peter. Thanks for your advice, I finally decided to stick to SH3, so I started to research what kind of SH3 mods are best suited for HD WS experience.

Hi, Fahnenbohn! Never heard before about your mod. Ill definitely going to try all combinations. Im trying to decide which one is more realistic. Stock and GWX environments looks like a swimming pool for children in Caribbean resort regardless of location, and M.E.P. seems to produce clouds everywhere, even in seas where sky usually is crystal clear whole year. Maybe your mod is an advancement in this area?

I'm running 8.1 64bit, and wish I had 7 64 bit instead.

I've looked into Windows 10 and I'm not impressed. There's one hell of a learning curve to it from what I see in the Windows 10 manual I bought a couple of days ago. I thinking of using my XP Home 32 bit HDD as a slave and putting SH3 on that. It was so much simpler back then.

I think you might like 10 over 8, but I'm still on the fence some about moving from 7 to 10. The settings are what I needed to get used to going from 7 to 10, but I have it where it wants me now and it's actually OK, just alternate routes to the same places that I've become familiar with from all previous versions.

I as I said I have the Windows 10 Complete magazine and from what I'm seeing in it, it's gonna be a steep learning curve just to do what is/was so much easier with previous Windows. It's even said MS is now working on Windows 11. Does that mean 10 isn't all that great?

I don't need or even use Xbox, and I don't need MS looking over my shoulder when I use their product. I have heard that you can set 10 up so they aren't looking.

I always use OS which is mainstream when I build my PC during its whole life cycle (mine PC is from 2009). It ensures great compatibility and adequate performance. To be honest, I dont even know Win 10 already exist!
