Indeed. Lanterns (so that relatively experienced sailors like me could tell if they were moving towards you, away from you, and so on), navigation lights, interior lights, etc.

Better responses are a must, too. A destroyer would return to port if it was heavily damaged, not just continue its patrol ,
Most ships, in war time, are blacked out.

For just this purpose.
