In my current installation (SHIV with TMO and RSRD) even large terrain objects like Golden Gate or piers or cranes gets visible only at range of about 3 000 yards or so even in clear weather. Has this problem being solved or is it something next to impossible? I could not find this even mentioned anywhere - probably because SH IV is already quite old sim.
Any help availible? -RC- |

CapnScurvy is your man with a fix for that he's incorporating into his new supermod. I'm sure if you asked he'd let you know exactly how to fix it.

![]() I don't know if this is exactly the same as what you mean, but I've noticed when leaving Manila, I will sail near Cavite, and it will only appear when fairly close (I don't recall the exact range). It is kind of like a mirage. I figured it was just a graphic rendering limitation, and everyone had it. |

The stock game (and most of the mods for it) have the visual "fog" settings set too close in distance for an average "clear day" day.
A good test is to simply start a new Campaign from Pearl Harbor.....starting at the "at sea" position. Compare your view looking back at Oahu Island over your right shoulder. It's only about 5nm from shore: ![]() Yet, you won't see the island. The game has the terrain fogged in too much. There's no reason why on a clear day, a 5nm object (like an island) should not be capable of being seen. I've got comparison images, found HERE, from my [WIP] Day of Infamy mod thread regarding this very issue. It's my intention to fix this issue with the new mod.

That's just one of about a dozen reasons that Day of Infamy threatens to be the best mod in the history of Silent Hunter 4. I can't wait to try it out but Scurvy won't release it until it's ready. When we get it we'll get a complete mod we can depend on. And that's one of the dozen or so reasons!

I feel your pain.
I asked the mod Guru's over at kickinback why I couldn't see Sofu Gan until I was within approx 2 nm, and if anyone knew how to 'fix' that. For example a convoy can be sighted much farther away no problem... not being able to spot landmarks including mountains is a frustrating issue, and not realistic. Sofu Gan is about as tall as the length of a fleetboat and is roughly 180' x 280', .... IOW it is not a small rock! Of course the reply was that scene.dat is the problem and that CapnScurvy had just released a mod that addressed that very issue. So, CapnScurvy is 'the right man' and I'm sure he will correct this issue to the best of his ability again, in his much anticipated new mega mod as RR said. Happy Hunting!
