Seems like a dumb thing for VW to do, but in hindsight, I suppose it seemed brilliant in the way that great corporate crimes always are. The best way to rob a bank is to own one; the best way to defeat factory-set emissions controls is to own the factory.

Seems like what VW should have done is include instructions in the owner's manual on how to drive so that the car would maintain the cleanliness that the computer would manage under test conditions.
