I'm sure no one means to be disrespectful. It's human nature to face adversity with humor. For the most part, everyone has wished President Carter well. As with any public figure, it's hard if not impossible to separate someone from who they are and what they did. That is of course how we know them. As you pointed out, he served in uniform as a submariner . I pointed this out as well http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=221362

Like you, I feel he is deserving of respect, having served in uniform. That same respect is due anyone who has served their country in a similar capacity. Having been a sitting president though, people being people will look back in retrospect and let history decide their ultimate successes and failures.

I think most pointed out what they liked and disliked of President Carter's Presidency and why. We all wish him well. I felt he was a man of deeply rooted principals and integrity and I think most here agreed with that but everyone is free to form their own opinions . Any time you have a public forum and write publicly , there will be opposing viewpoints and we should welcome that.

As you and I and most said. We wish President Carter well and celebrate his enormous achievements.

Only a true drinker of the kool aid could read this thread and come away feeling that President Carter was being disrespected.

This thread is a heck of a lot more respectful than the thread where someone posted that the tumor that killed Ted Kennedy should have been awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Wait seriously? I can understand why some people not might be all that respectful of Ted Kennedy upon his death(Chappaquiddick the main reason) but to say something like that?

Ay, tumors (plural) in the brain that metastasized from his previous liver cancer? Does not sound good Certainly wishing him all the best, that's quite a brave fight to put up, especially at his age.

Heard Jimmy Carter make his statement on his condition on the radio today. I can only hope to be as mentally cogent and lucid when I reach his age, not to mention as emotionally composed in dealing with such a dire prognosis.

Regarding alleged disrespect to Carter in this thread, I offer this as a counter:

If one wished for an example of grace under pressure, just look at Carter and how he has dealt with the bad hands he has been dealt...
