Kentucky is nice. Though summers of 95 degree heat at 98% humidity suck.

Washington state and Seattle.

I think my 4th choice after Montana, New York city or San Francisco (the only part of California)

Judging by those fantastic hiking pictures you post you may have experienced it somewhat already.

And eastern Washington is mostly tumbleweeds and jackrabbits. Zzzzz. Ideal for tank exercises and nuclear waste though.

I think the biggest difference would be the endless forests Washington/Montana has.
Alpine forests are more like small patches between cultivated valleys and rocky mountains.

You just can't get lost here. If you don't know where you're going just walk until you find a creek and follow it or wait until an Italian comes by picking mushrooms and steal his GPS and car.

Probably the closest I've been to your neck of Europe was Berchetsgaden in the very southern tip of Germany. On the opposite side of the Alps, obviously. It was a misty day, but the view was still spectacular.

Hey Herr Hitler! I'm planting noxious weeds, kudzu and poison ivy seeds in your back yard. Hope you get a rash.
