Mmm...
You speak of two symptoms:
1) Lagging mouse pointer
2) Crash to desktop

I'm not an expert but I'm not also a newbie when we speak about computers... And I can say with some confidence that both symptoms doesn't look like to be related to heavy graphics issues to me.

For symptom #1, if you also does not experience low FPS, it is not a graphic issue in the sense of "heavy graphics to be render each frame for the video card"...

For symptom #2, it looks like you simply run out of memory (a classic OutOfMemory error) and the culprit (AFAIK) could more probably be the awsome "Merchant Fleet Mod" than "MEP5".
About MFM: do you have a 64 bit system and didi you installed the 4GB patch?

Once again I ask you if you could measure (CTRL+F8) your in-game FPS and report it back here.

Well, I don't know then.
If you have low FPS then it is indeed a rendering problem.

Maybe the problem is you are running the game on a laptop.

What do you mean?
I'm asking because I too am running the game on a laptop and I've no problem at all (with MEP5, I've not installed MFM).
Please, could you elaborate?

Indeed. My laptop runs GWX + MEP + MFM, (1400x1050 resolution), at 20-30 FPS, even with 24x antialiasing, 16x anisotropic filtering at the highest texture quality.
If I had to guess at the problem here, I too would say MFM is the culprit, not MEP.
