I think the most telling comments about Cruise came in a review by Siskel & Ebert regarding one of his movies. One of the critics noted a main problem with Cruise is you don't really see or believe the characters he plays because it seems to always be a sort "Oh, look, Tom Cruise is playing a 'such-and-such'" rather than Cruise is actually living the character. The comparison was made how other actors, such as Hanks, Crowe, and others made you forget there was an actor on the screen and you saw and cared about a fully fleshed-out character...

Another comment made over the years regarding Cruise is he is a "lazy" actor, who only applies himself when he is faced with appearing alongside a much better co-star such as Nicholson, Hoffman, Hackman, etc. I think this is a rather fair assessment..

well I know a lot of people obsess over what celebrities do in their personal life, personally I don't really care. A movie is an entertainment product, the only important point for me is to get a good value for my dollar. "Tom Cruise" is a known quantity, I have seen most of his recent movies, "MI 4", "Oblivion", "Jack Reacher", "Edge of Tomorrow", all were very enjoyable, good action flicks. None were great cinema, but you all know what to expect when you see a "Tom Cruise" movie and he delivers.

now the MI 5 plane stunt is a publicity gimmick, but personally I feel it adds to the movie. In "Skyfall", there were a few actions scenes where it was obvious Daniel Craig's face had been added by CGI to a stunt man. Yes, you can say its just a movie, but watching MI 4 and knowing that Tom Cruise, the actor, really did hang 150 stories up outside of a skyscraper makes the scene that more enjoyable.

I am a big fan of the "mission impossible" TV series. A lot of purists hated the movie franchise, but personally, I like the movies. I thought MI 2 was a bit weak, but the other 3 were very good.

p.s. - personally, I think the guy is nuts, I would not do those stunts, no matter how much they paid me.
