To the game the icebergs are ships so no saving near them if your SH3 is unstable!
BTW have you tried the solution described here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166283 With enough memory, UAC off, Windows indexing off and read-only attributes ticked off the save games can be very stable, in my experience.
