Rockstar, both terms spanner and wrench are used this side of the pond too.

Generally, a spanner is a fixed size, and a wrench is adjustable but there are no hard and fast rules about the use of either; and why should there be.

If language didn't evolve we would still be talking like the monosyllabic caveman.
