The attraction for me is: "they've been her long before me and will be here long after me....you are in a supremely commanding presence.

No I wasn't but when I was a teenager, some of my friend's parents had them so I spent a lot of time in them.

I love the early misty cold mornings up there with the birds calling and Tule elk. It's usually wet but rarely has snow as it's only at about 2000 feet elevation. I'm taking the photo in that picture and I sold the bug about two years ago when it started having crankcase problems and I didn't have anywhere to park it off the street anymore. It was all stock 1964 1200 cc and 6 volts.
