I think they're two issues, shaders and then the range settings in scene.dat. Like clouds, they can be solid or more transparent. The game uses light, med and heavy fog. If you're talking 500 yard visuals in TMO, that's heavy and obvious you shouldn't have good visuals.

As stated, learn to use heavy fog to your advantage. Depending on the sun position/light values, you can see a silhouette fairly far or just ask your sonarman for contact to nearest ship and try to get close, but shoot down that bearing. A few hits usually starts a small fire and you can easily see and shoot at that. Often a hit will cause a ship to turn on its lights, easy to see. Shooting torps is a lil more tricky, you can do the math, but I try to run parallel a lil behind, get about 600 yards, get a bearing, guess speed based on type ship and shoot from bow. Hard to miss at that range. When you get 40 bofars added, you can wipe out entire convoys on the surface. Just be careful when they get radar, they will send a hunter right up your arse. Also, don't get too close when ships explode, if one is loaded with fuel or ammo, it can easily damage or sink you within 3-500 yards.
