He can easily get his name off the list with his media connections, so it's not really a big deal. Sounds like DHS has system in place that flags questionable transactions; a one-way ticket to Syria would certainly do the trick. The implications would be you may have a potential ISIL jihadist on your hands and, given the recent concerns about homegrown jihadists going to the Mideast, then returning to do mischief here, it is a reasonable precaution...

Jornalists getting paid too much?

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to book round trip airfare and just not shown up for the return flight from Istanbul?
It certainly would have kept him off the radar.

yes and yes

my niece was trying to fly back from Germany after leaving her husband and the round trip ticket price was $949 but the one way ticket would have been $2,400

Actually, there is a possibility a failure to use the return ticket and then re-entering the US by other route or means might just cause a flag, especially if you were travelling to or form a "sensitive area" of the world. They'd probably would want to know why you didn't return as you planned or stated initially...

I think at worst you might be questioned when passing through customs.

The climate of government paranoia since 2001 has become utterly ridiculous. All you have to do is sneeze in an airport and they put you on a watch or no fly list.
It's almost comical to watch these bumbling idiots.

They probably have every employee of Faux News on the Yellow Journalism list.

I was on the watch list for a while. No big deal. When I flew it only added about 30 seconds to the check in time while they queried another data base.

I always thought that my name was not that common but I am finding out that there are a mess of people that share the same name as I do. Go figure?

It is a watch list. It is not like I had armed guards arresting me every time I stepped into an airport. After a few trips, my ID was flagged in the same terrorist watch list as a good guy and I have not had any problems.

I think Byers is trying to make this a bigger thing than it is TERRORIST WATCH LIST ohh very scary words.

Even the guy on the list Hayes, said that it is not a big deal.

Yeah, but just watch how much the press and the public will howl if a very minor "miss" in the administration or exercise of the no-fly list results in a terrorist strike...

Not a big fan of Kool-Aid; I like the harder stuff: Canada Dry Ginger Ale...

The point I was making is people gripe and moan about the various anti-terrorism actions taken, but if a terror attack does happen, those same people are often the most vocal about "something should have been done" and most often that something is pretty much what they were griping about in the first place. It's kinda of like something I read recently about Boehner and his public reactions to Obama: if Obama doesn't do something about an issue, Boehner rushes to the mic to carp about "What a disgrace Obama's doing nothing!"; Obama then does something and Boehner rushes to the mic to carp about "OMG, it's disgraceful, Obama's doing something"...

Now, if only Boehner and the House Republican'ts would do something constructive, we might have something there...
