I read and heard about it in the Swedish news. What I think is funny in this story is that Sweden have moved "2" of our JAS39 to Gotland.

Only Two against how many Russian MIG or Su !!??

I do know that our JAS39 is a very good fighter jet and our pilots are well trained, that is just ain't enough.

Back to story

I don't think Putin is interested in escalating the crisis in Ukraine. (I hope he isn't)

I do not think that to Markus, to launch a large-scale war.

Its more bureaucratic excercising. When some months ago NATO announced that it would increase the alarm level of its interceptor patrol in the Baltic, it only meant that they would continue with already scheduled training flights that already were running at that time.

And when German airforce announced that they would contribute to that "increased" NATO presence by sending aircraft, that only meant that they sent I think 4 or 6 airplanes that served as training targets for the NATO fighters exercising there, and after being "shot" down as planned, returned to German bases.

The Baltic Sea I would expect to already be under tight NATO surveillance by submarines, mainly German ones. The Baltic is Germany's primary naval focus within the framework of NATO doctrine and scenarios focussing on the USSR/Russia.

During my time in the Swedish Navy I said to one of our Officer. Soviet is not in anyway interested in occupying the entire country.

What Soviet is intested in is two areas

South Sweden and part of middle Sweden- Clear access to Denmark and North sea and so on.

Northern part of Sweden.

It's about 50 % of Our country they are interested in.

I remember he asked me how I knew this

I don't know for sure, but if I was the leader of Soviet, why should I use soldiers equipment a.s.o to invade a whole country, when I only need access to some part of our county.

To say it directly if Russia chose to attack Sweden, we have not much of military to use against them.

Some years ago there were made som report in which it clearly was stated Sweden could not defend every part of Sweden and even if the Swedish military choses to defend only some part of it, it could not withstand a longer war, more than 3-4 weeks and we couldn't rely on help from NATO or EU(can't find anywhere, I know I have read it, in Swedish)

Lately most of the Swedish politician have raised their voices for an increase of the Swedish military. What people seems to forget is that it takes more than years to rebuild an army or a military back to what it was before the cut down started

In the mid of the 60's Sweden had the 5th biggest navy
In the beginning of the 60's/70's Sweden had the 4 biggest airforce
(have read that in some books)

The reason to why we had such a big navy and airforce was that we had to fight NATO and WP( it was not official but everyone knew that Sweden was more friendly to NATO than a neutral country)

Without doing the research I'm happy to accept your positional figures for each military arm but the question I would pose is....What use are they or were they, you never used them?

I can only concur they were intended for self defence should ever Sweden come under attack.

So talking tough and rearranging deck chairs on Titanic? Sounds familiar...

BTW, Do anyone here known any NATO country (or one next to Russia) which is not cutting its military right now?
