Just for clarification: is not an in-game option... in the game you still "die" and your career finish. But SH3 Commander will recognize a "dead" carrer and will let you edit the "career state" in the context of SH3 Commander so now you have two choices:
1) if you and your boat died when submerged then you should stick with the "you are dead" case; 2) if you surfaced your boat and then you were killed you can instead roleplay the fact that you and your crew came on the surface just to scuttle the boat + surrender to the enemy and so should stick with the "you are taken as pow" case. That would be useful when generating (with SH3C) your Kaleun "Personell File", so it is only cosmetic, after all ![]() |

That is still quite interesting, I might just have to accidentally surface the boat in the middle of a convoy, like Dönitz, to test it out.

Don't forget: SH3 Commander randomizes the depth range of enemy sensors to simulate thermal layers. It could be that the escorts aren't hearing you because you're under this artificially created layer through SH3 Commander.
Also... Depth charges automatically Unspawn at 300 meters, if you manage to get to 305 meters the depth charges won't reach you HOWEVER the blast wave if one blowing up at 299 meters will get you
