Nautilus Live Streaming Video Starting in June!

Starting on June 11'th, Dr. Robert Ballard’s Exploration Vessel “Nautilus” will begin a series of expeditions throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. On board Nautilus is the ROV's Hercules and Argus, they will be conducting underwater surveillance and mapping in several different locations. Some of this summers expeditions goals include a stop in Dry Tortugas to assist
NOAA, exploring many shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico including exploring the wreck of a German WWII submarine, studying the effects of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill disaster of 2010 on the Gulf and it's marine life. They will also be doing extensive underwater exploration around the island of Navassa off the coast of Haiti, and spending some time exploring the Mesoamerican reef, the second biggest reef system on the planet.


As with NOAA's explorations back in April, the Nautilus crew will stream the live ROV feeds over the Internet for live telepresence events with researches on shore. The live streams will be available on their web page at http://www.nautiluslive.org. This will also be part of the JASON project, a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by Dr. Robert D. Ballard. The organization connects students to real science and exploration to inspire and motivate them to study and pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. I find these live feeds quite fascinating to watch, you never know for certain just what they are going to find on the sea floor. Anything from new geologic formations, new fish, plant or animal species. Of course undiscovered shipwrecks are always a possibility. The ocean floor is only 5 – 7 percent explored, and the ocean water column it's self has only been about one percent explored. There is a LOT of water out there, and this is scientific exploration at its best!

The Ocean Exploration Trust’s E/V Nautilus has undergone an extensive refit in St. Petersberg, Florida in preparation for the 2014 exploration season. The patch for this years exploration was designed by a student from Hawaii, who submitted her winning design for a contest held by the Ocean Exploration Trust, you can read more about that HERE!


The 2014 expeditions will last approximately 120 days, from June 11'th into October. About 200 researches will take part on board the vessel during different legs of the expeditions. I am really looking forward to it! I am hoping they release a schedule on when and where they plan to be making dives, although those dates can certainly change due to weather conditions and technical problems, it would still be good to know a general time frame.

I am very curious to know which German sub they are going after, I haven't been able to find out any information on that, or what ship wrecks they will be looking at. According to the map of the expedition they put up, they will be around Leeward Islands at some point, if the map is in chronological order I am assuming some time in October.



As far as I know the only U-boats in that area are the U-156, which was sunk near Barbados, and the U-615 north of Porlamar. Of course, there are other possible targets such as the U-159, U-94 and farther to the north of Cuba the U-176. There are a few others, but those appear to be the closest targets according to the map.

There are of course hundreds of other shipwrecks to see in the Caribbean, so there is really no point in speculating on those. They do have a habbit though of going after newly discovered wrecks first, and it appears they may be revisiting a couple of newly discovered wrecks they visited last year. NOAA's Okeanos Explorer also visited them in April.

I watched the video "63 years beow: U-2513" here:


And noted at 02:15 that there are only 2 torpedo tube hatches on the visible bow side but... AFAIK the type XXI should have 6 total so there should be 3 visible...
