after spending 3 tension filled hours evading and surviving (all in real time), i would like to go forward attempting to get back to base.

If I add the traveler mod at this point, will I be able to carry on or is it all over.

I likely know the answer, but it doesnt hurt to ask I suppose

You can just go into your config file and change fuel to unlimited.

Fuel won't help. Probably switching to unlimited batteries won't either? Might be worth a try anyway.

Maybe someone knows how to hack the saved game to repair the engines?

I'm unable to get the boat underway. My proceedure on every mission is to make a few saves throughout the mission. For example, one after the ocean slog to enemy territory, one after an interesting battle so I can go back and analyse, and a close just outside of home port. The idea is just in case. Had a power outage the other day, saved my bacon. Surprisingly the game has not crashed once since I've been playing actively. (1 year)

It was my goal to play it out until I died, so restarting a save after a real death is not acceptable. Dont want to use saves as a cheat.

I'm kinda mixed here, I like that I have been assigned a baleo, that bad boy can go deep. Im in the fall of 1943 timeframe.

I'm at a turning point. Thinking that I should just start over with the RSRD (?) mod and mod up the a new boat (likely TMO). Of just move forward with this one in the relative stock setup.

I am in port, what will happen to the current life if I install the mod's here. will I have to go back to 1941-2 and begin anew with an early war boat. I'm enjoying the increasing difficulty of the IJN and it has me on edge as I go into battle.

thoughts?

Maybe this should be a new thread!!

Ugh!

Give this a try?
Rescue Sub mod:

What mods are you using? How far into your career are you?

In Real Life, you could return on two engines... Or even one engine. Or use a radio. Or make sails out of the mattress covers and rig them to the periscope. Or swim for it. So I wouldn't consider it cheating to try to salvage a buggered save.

Either way you're going to have to violate "realism".

Oh thanks, i did not find that before.

I decided yesterday to back up and overwrite the file. I reran the save where I had the issue to see if I could try to figure out how the DD's/DE's found me.

I hit a merchant in the area with one torp and it didnt want to expire. To save fish, I surfaced and proceeded to put it away with the deck gun. took more time than I liked. Then I was continually put down by aircraft.

When the convoy came by in the shipping lane, it may have had a sense of where I was and used active sonar in the area I was working. If thats the case the game is very clever.

As for mods, just some eye candy Fine crew, enviornment something and sky and water support files.

pretty much stock.

I did edit the file to adjust time compression settings so I wouldnt be caught out with using high compression.

Only help (aid) I use is unlimited fuel. Man, I hate the long voyages getting to the patrol zone, so i run them at flank speed.

I'm Ok with starting over, just wanted to do it with a Baleo, not a Porpose. And early war is fairly easy. Other than the agent landing mission where I barely got out alive in shallow water. Got real lucky with a tail shot on a subchaser/escort. Badly bloodied dont want to do that again.

Cool.

But, if you're playing mostly stock, you might want to consider starting over with one of the mega-mods - they really improve the game. Well, imho they rescue it from near un-playability.

I haven't played them all, but I can recommend:
RFB+RSRDC
or
TMO+RSRDC (+OTC)(+Traveller Mod)

There's also Webster's Game Fixes Only (GFO) Mod, which looks tempting. I might try that next.

Scuttlebutt is, RFB might be more realistic, TMO might be more challenging - I haven't played enough TMO yet to really make a comparison.

IDK about starting in a Balao though. In 1941 you can get a Gar class sub (6 fwd tubes ftw) if you start in Pearl. You'll probably have to start later in the war for a Balao.
