Yes, time compression can be a real killer. You have to watch the torpedo tubes, if you switch from one tube to another, while in the periscope view, without firing first, all the other tubes will close. I always hit the open button right before firing each tube just to be sure.

Oy, that sounds familiar! I imagine in real life more than a few Kaleuns met their watery demise for the same reason, thinking "just one more shot" or "just a little closer".
Re TC, when 32X turns orange, you are too close to the enemy and absolutely should get back in 1X. If it's green and you can go to 64X, you may be safe, for the moment. Personally I leave it at 1X throughout an attack, using TC just for shadowing prior to attack, if the enemy doesn't change course.
