Northwest Germany, close to the Dutch border: first bicycle tour of the year today under a friendly, golden sun. In T-Shirt and shorts. I found it almost too warm already (I have troubles with warm temperatures).

I probably rolled it up too tightly for the temperatures and POP! It busted.

29 and clear here in the Poconos today.

I simply give thanks we seldom get temperatures anywhere as low as you both do.

Mind you, I have seen neighbours throw a pan of hot water on a frozen windscreen on rare occasions and look puzzled as to why the glass shatters

I'm glad you Brits don't get the sub zero temps that we in Canada get. Even down south in PA, they hardly ever get as cold as we do. I see no point in the rest of the world having to endure the -40+ temps we get.
For you grammar buffs, is it expressed as the temperature is down to -40 plus? Or down to minus 40 negative?

Not to mention hot water freezes just as fast or faster than cold water.

It's almost as intelligent as pouring cold water in a radiator without the motor running. Why did my motor block crack?

Yup. Cold water in a hot block will do the same as hot water on a cold windshield. Mess up the rest of your day.

I'm not sure on that one, and I couldn't express it properly to get a good reading off of Google, but I believe that "plus" or "minus" in this instance is slang, and doesn't come under grammar rules. I think it should be <any temperature> "or lower", "or higher".

I was thinking math rules myself.
So -40+ would be proper depending on what comes after +. Which would affect the final results with the proper up or down Brass Monkey rateing.

So -40+20 would be -60 N O T -20?

No.
-40 + 20 = -20
Do it in Calculator.

-40 + -20 = -60

If your like me? Stick to numbers you can use your finger and toes to count on. Like 5 or 10.

How about, 'the brass monkey says it was 40 degrees below zero last nite, but it was 20 degrees colder the nite before.'
Using that reasoning, negatives go down and positives go up.

Correct.
It also opens the door to grammer judgement.
Which would again be Steve's department.
