Default latest version of SH4?

What is the latest official version of SH4 that I should be running and is it stable?
I want to make sure that there are no navigation, targeting and/or firing glitches from the original download.
Thanks ahead.

Version 1.5 is the latest version. You need to buy the U-Boats expansion though in order to get it.

advice above is accurate, you need the v1.5 ad-on that must be purchased separately or as a package with the game if you buy the right version of the game that includes it (gold edition) v1.5 is needed for almost all of the mods that are out there for the game to work.

the game still has many bugs and "known issues" so its not going to give you a fully debugged game.

use my GFO mod on top of the stock v1.5 game and it fixes many of the remaining issues the stock games till has after this final update plus it adds some extra game content (missions) and a few minor things to improve the looks and feel of the game but it still will be the stock game for the most part.

play that until you are well versed in the game and desire something to increase the difficulty of it, then you can choose from RFB or TMO or FOTRS mods but read the mod info carefully so you understand what each will do since they all have a different perspective on what game difficulty should be and the way things should work or not work when playing the game.

I would recommend downloading it from Amazon as opposed to Steam or other sources. They usually have it for a decent price anyway.

Amazon will give you the exact same files as were on the DVD, installs in the normal manner. Steam is proprietary and stuck at v1.3, at least the non-gold version. I got Steamed, then I re-bought it from Amazon via digital download.

is GFO MOD a simple install or do I have to edit individual files?

From his GFO Thread:

Install information:

As with any mod, you should make a backup copy of your complete unmodded stock v1.5 data folder and save it to a backup drive or burn it to a disk so you can restore the game later if you ever have need to restore any corrupted files.

You need to unzip the "Webster's GFO Mod v1.1" to your desktop or to your "my documents" folder and then open it.

Take out the "Game Fixes Only Mod" folder found there and put that folder into the jsgme and then install GFO.

The "Webster's GFO Mod v1.1" folder contains the GFO read me as well as the read me for all the mods in GFO and install
info along with the "GFO Snorkel Patch" folder.

as mentioned above its a mod package so you just place it in the mod installer and tell it to activate it.

you must use jsgme mod installer found here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=204594

to use mods with the game and it does all the work for you of putting all the mods where they need to go, it really makes using mods as easy as clicking one button

enjoy the game and good hunting
