I would like to know the answer to this also.

I do not think this would really be much of a "cheat". Because if you were actually standing on the bridge you would have an idea of spacial perception as to which bearing your body was facing, based on where your feet are.

But very frequently when I switch to binocular view and pan the horizon looking for the ship sighted contact and I cannot find it, I zoom back out only to find I'm looking 45 degrees or more past where I thought I was actually looking.

A bearing indicator on the binocular view would give you some idea of where you were looking to make up for your lack of real-life spacial perception.

I would not even mind if there were no actual bearing numbers, just N/NE/E/SE/S/SW/W/NW indicators. Or their numerical equivalents with no divisions.

The bino view just needs to give some idea of the general direction you are looking.
