Default "Memory could not be read" issue

I tried to install SHIII on an old computer which has Win XP. I loaded the patch and custom Config files, which I saved before I put Win 7 on my new computer. When I try to run the program , I get a message that says
"The instruction "0X02382e87" references memory at "0X00000000. The memory could not be read".

Is there a fix for this problem?

What are the custom config files you mention? Any other mods running?

I reloaded it with no custom configs and no mods, still has the same problem. Also will not save a career.

So, is the problem with the new computer (Win7) or with the old (XP). And is this a completely new clean install, or transfered over from the old pc?

I'm lost in what the Win 7 computer has to do with this.

Thanks for your help. My mistake, Win 7 has nothing to do with this except that I have had no luck in Win 7,(my new computer) even when running it in xp mode.
The reason I posted this request for help is that I have an old computer which runs on Win XP which I kept for the purpose of running SH 3, IL-2 Sturmovik and a few other programs that will not run on Win 7. Unfortunately, SH3 and at least one of the others will not run on the old xp computer either, so my question pertains to the old computer with xp.
Clear as mud?
Thanks for your help!

Please post a DXDiag report - the easiest way to remote diagnose your pc.

START -> run -> "dxdiag" -> enter

The DXDiag window pops up. Work through the tabs and safe the results to a TXT file on your desktop.

Copy the text and paste it here aboard.

By the way - we could probably make SH3 work on your Win 7 rig.

The computer I am trying to use is not online, don't know if that would affect anything. I ran dxdiag and here is what I got:
"Error: could not get basic sound info results code: 0x80070057
invalid argument(s)

What is the trick to getting SH# to work in Win 7?
Thanks!

Do not install the game into the default location. Or in other words, leave it out of any folder that starts with "Program Files". That cuts down on most problems regarding patching and modding it.

I suggest you start over and give it a new install location, something like "c:\games\Silenthunter3"

Any chance this game was at some point modded with the H.Sie patch on SH3.exe?

I think there is an issue with your old computer, either hardware or software related. I agree with the advice to try installing it again on your new Windows 7 PC, in it's own directory, as Pisces has pointed out. It will probably be the simplest solution. Just make sure to remember to point the installation to the new directory.

I removed SH3 from the new computer (Win 7) and re-installed it into a folder named "games" outside of the programs folder. Got the following message:This application can be launched with a release version of
win 98osrw,1/98/me/NT 4.020000 xp server 2003 onlyl"

I ran the Starforce remover and got a message saying no files found to remove. What is my next step?
Thanks!
