I usually end up doing this anyway, because at least half the time the escorts do not come straight in, they approach you with a zig-zag course. Hitting them when they do this is very hard and you only have one shot. Even when they zig-zag, they will straighten out at about 400 meters and come straight in on their attack run. Your torpedo needs 200 meters to arm. So you will be cutting it very, very close. You'll want to have your fish set at the correct depth and as a magnetic fuse and have the outer door open and ready to fire. Constantly adjust your course as he pursues you to keep your tail pointed directly at him. You don't want the torpedo to have to make any curve adjustment as it leaves the sub. You want an absolute straight shot. As soon as the destroyers stops zigging, fire down his throat. With an electric, he won't change course. With a steamer, he will, but he won't be able to react in time. Sit back and watch the fireworks! ![]() You can also pull this off the the bow tubes while going full reverse but if you miss you may not be able to get out of the way in time to avoid getting rammed.
