Default Send mast height to TDC - what does it do?

Hello, me again...

Probably a bit of a noob question but on the recognition manual in the game there is a setting to "send mast height to TDC".

I've not really used it, just set range on the TDC to whatever I needed to (mostly 800-1000yds) but I noticed yesterday that by clicking on the "send mast height to TDC" option on the recognition manual page when viewing a target it changes the range dial on the TDC.

But what exactly is it doing? Is it giving me an estimate of the range based on the mast height and how it looks in the periscope view?

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, OK thanks. I've don't use the stadimeter, can't get used to using it properly. I've been using the Game Fixes Only mod and I just drag the range dial so the dial is at my desired range (usually 800-1000yds), although the little grey triangle ends up being on the left hand side.

So I take it that as I'm doing it that way the "send mast height to TDC" function is redundant for me unless I use the stadimeter?

Yes it would be redundant, but the stadimeter is very useful when not using map contacts.

The "TDC" uses the relation:
tangent stadimeter angle = mast height / range

the stadimeter measures the angle, and since you identify the ship, you know the mast ht., so it can calculate the range.

Like you said, if you already know (or decide to make a fair guess), you don't really need it.

Simple answer: Correct, if you're not using the stadimeter or have manual targeting off, the mast height is irrelevant so there's no point sending the mast height data to the TDC.
